Q: How'd ya get into hockey anyway?
A: I learned to play hockey as a teenager in the Basque region of
Spain.
Q: Yeah, right!
A: Really, my family moved there so my Dad could do a 2 year work
assignment.I went to an American school where they took us boys
to an ice rink once every two weeks. At that rate it took almost
the whole 2 years just to get good enough skating forwards and backwards.
Shortly after I had actually started to play hockey, my family moved
back to California. I was seventeen and there wasn't a league around
for me to play in. But I did keep up my skating skills by going
to Sunvalley Mall in Concord which used to have a rink.
Q: Tell me about your experience with the Quakes.
A: Some friends who knew I liked hockey told me about an article
in the Bay Area Reporter that a team was forming to compete in the
98 Gay Games in Amsterdam. I knew it was perfect for me! A chance
to finally really get to play hockey and to visit Europe again,
which I hadn't done since living in Spain. I went to the team's
second meeting at the Castro Country Club and have been
involved ever since.
Q: Is that beard of yours a playoff beard that you for
some reason never got rid of?
A: No, I've had it since '94, before I got back into hockey.
Q: Is it tough being Captain?
A: It had been at times in the past. But it's a pleasure with the
great group of people we have on this team. We are like a big, happy
(and only slightly dysfunctional) family!
