The team is mostly gay men and women but welcomes anyone and everyone, as long as you want to play hockey and are gay and lesbian friendly. We play straight teams, gay teams, and mixed teams. We play locally and internationally. We just love to play hockey. We have people who just picked up the sport a few years ago, we have folks that haven't played since high school, we have players in their twenties, we have players who are a bit older than that, we have players from Canada, we have players from Hawaii, we have a wonderfully diverse team.
The team travels occasionally to participate in a number of ice hockey tournaments including most recently the 2002 Gay Games VI in Sydney and the 2003 Vancouver Cutting Edges Defi Coast-to-Coast Challenge. In the past we have traveled to the Amsterdam Gay Games, the Play LA Tournament in Los Angeles, the Toronto Friendship Tournament, Slide for Pride in Seattle, and more. We even have individual players who travel to tournaments even when the team is unable to attend.

We are associated with Team San Francisco and the International Gay and Lesbian Ice Hockey Association (IGLIHA).

OUR PHILOSOPHY

The mission of the Earthquakes hockey teams is to provide an environment free of harassment and discrimination for members and friends of the LGBT community to play ice hockey and fulfill their athletic aspirations. But that is just part of it. Our goal is to play fun inclusive hockey - to have a good time on and off the rink - to try our best (so what if we lose a few games?) - to continue to be better hockey players, and to have smiles on our faces all the time. We're a fun loving bunch of people who love to play hockey with other great gay and gay-friendly folks.

ABOUT THE SAN FRANCISCO LEAGUE

The SF Quakes play in the Yerba Buena Adult Hockey League's "D" Division. It is a no-check league whose teams are comprised of a majority average hockey players who have had experience at the high school hockey level and/or in an adult hockey program. The players continue to work on and improve their individual hockey skills as well as overall team skills. The "D" Division is appropriate for those who have moderate to proficient ice hockey skills combined with the desire to play at a competitive level.
